What is roller or window shades? These are substitutes to curtains. They do perform the same function as the curtain which is to make sure that a room is safe from the outside world by covering it up. Since you are new in the city, you cannot exactly buy the motorized one and put it in a small dorm room or in a small apartment.

As mentioned above, there are so many various types of shades. There are the horizontal, vertical, window, wood, motorized, bamboo, patio and so on. If you know the types and the functions of each, pick the one that will work well for you, your needs, your room's size and your lifestyle.
3. Size
The size of your shades will mainly be according to the size of your window. If you have done step number 1 which is to research, you probably know that you should've measured the length and width of your window first before going to a store and purchasing window shades. If you are diligent and have done that, you can now buy your shades. When buying, make sure that you will pick something an inch longer than the exact size of your window for you can easily roll up the shades if it is long unlike when it is short, you can't of course, elongate it. You can also buy those shades that are custom-made. It will really depend on your budget. But since you are new in town, you might as well buy the ones that are readily made because they are a lot cheaper and you also do not have to wait long to get them.
4. Style
You can choose different colors, styles, designs of your shades depending on your room or your house's motif.
The best thing about roller shades is that they are easy to clean unlike curtains.
