Whilst February in the UK is rainy, cold and generally very depressing, in Thailand it is one of the best months of the year to enjoy a spot of scuba diving, snorkelling and mountain trekking, to name just three of the many activities to be found in this country of spectacular scenery and welcoming locals.

The climate on Thailand will, however, vary drastically from coast to coast. Whilst the west coast enjoys its dry season during the western winter months, the east coast can be ridden with monsoons making many water based activities dangerous or impossible. If it is the east coast you want to visit, try to get in touch with local tourist bureaus before you go.

If you''re anxious to begin your scuba diving career, the gorgeous island of Ko Tao is a great place to begin. Far cheaper than its major competitor, Phuket, you''ll find some great diving packages here. The smaller companies tend to be friendlier than some of the larger, better advertised organisations, so shop around and try to look at some online reviews before you commit.

For climbing, however, Krabi is the place to be. Ao Nang and Hat Rai Leh offer some of the most spectacular climbing opportunities in the whole of Southeast Asia. Whilst beginners will also have some chances to try out their novice climbing skills, the best of what Krabi has to offer will be enjoyed by the more experienced adventurer.

Mountainous treks through some of the world''s most beautiful terrain can be found aplenty in Ko Chang. Plant lovers and naturalists will be enthralled by the biodiversity to be found here.

If it''s exotic wildlife you are keen to spot then Khao Yai National Park is the place for you. Over 50km of trekking trails and a host of friendly and informative guides will provide you with an unforgettable travel experience. This is arguably one of the world''s finest national parks.

For some quiet beach time, head to Ko Turatao and the surrounding islands, instead. This idyllic corner of the world, just north of the Malaysian border, will provide you with miles of unspoiled beachscape all to yourself.

Your flights will most likely connect from Bangkok, so don''t forget to experience the frenetic energy of the Thai capital by taking a couple of days to soak up the history and enjoy the fabulous shopping opportunities of this buzzing Southeast Asian location.
