References are key to every job whether it be character or work references.
What people say about you can either lift or limit your career!.
It is possible that in a subject access the company you want to work for have to declare what your current employer has said about you.
It should be that you should under Data Protection be able to see references more easily and be able to correct these so that people will have to be more careful about what they put about people and if they put false things there should be more laws available to sue people for defamation of character.
It is the usual do to others as you would like to done to you.
People should confirm that they know a person and things on character should be based on each setting because people can be perceived different in different settings so the more minimum the better.
References should be mandatory for work as current UK legislation does not require a reference from a former / current employer. If an employer does refuse to provide a reference regardless of what a person may have done they should be fined at least £500 as this can result in loss of earnings and progression.
What do people think about the whole issue of references?
